Market gardening intro
All over the world , people’s eyes are being opened to the ravages of industrial agriculture: pesticides, GMO’s, cancer, agribusiness. Along with this growing awareness is an increasing consumer demand for healthy, local, organic food. Alternative modes of selling and purchasing food are also gaining ground, visible not only in the mushrooming farmers’ markets but an increasing desire for people to grow their own food and pursue a simpler more self-sufficient lifestyle.
South Africa is no different with food security remaining a mainly elusive clause in our post 94 constitution with as many as 26% of fellow citizens unsure of where their next meal will come from. The market garden approach is for us a step towards addressing this harsh reality of our South African society. It is becoming increasingly clear that big agri combined with a ‘trickle down‘ economic system is not addressing on the ground access to healthy nutritional food. Small scale neighborhood farms built on sustainable farming practices is in our humble view an opportunity for a new and better tomorrow with small farmers growing affordable nutritious food for local communities.
